i can only say two things…yup and what the hell is wrong with people who support this kind of abuse in a country that prides itself in not supporting this kind of abuse? there was a time when Irish immigrants were treated like shit too. same narrow-minded mentality i’d say.
A picture is worth a thousand words
I agree that homophobic bullying should have no place among civilized people. It’s just too bad you don’t always agree, though, as your past homophobic attacks on people like Marcus Bachmann attest.
Unkind words are never illegal. Worse than bullying and the sort of political sideshow you selectively pound, is the denial of basic and fundamental civil rights. In our recent history, it had been illegal for gays and lesbians to be sexually intimate. Christian fundamentalists had put on state ballots to exclude gays and lesbians from teaching job and other civil service positions. And today, it is still illegal for gays and lesbians to marry or to adopt.
More than personal prejudicial conduct this is about irrational bigotry enshrined in law.
More and more I am reminded about the laws against inter-racial marriage…and how absurd they seem in our time. Our grandkids are going to think we were Crazy TO GET ALL HUNG UP ON THIS…and they would be right.
@randomneuralfirings - Angry words hurt, yes, but they cause far less anguish than the behavior those of the Abrahamic faiths. When christians and muslims stop putting people to death (in foreign countries it is illegal to even BE gay), stop mercilessly harassing people in the GLBT community, refusing them work or the basic right to marry the person of their choice, you will see a lot less animosity directed toward people who adhere to organized religions. When it is no longer acceptable to you (as a group, not you personally) to harass, stalk, verbally abuse, publicly denigrate and generally mistreat gays and use your religious beliefs as justification for those abuses, then and only then will you see people feeling more kindly toward you.
The same for people of other faiths. We’re pretty tired of being harassed by christians for not having the ‘right’ beliefs. Sick to death of it, in fact.
All it takes is to treat people like people. The way you’d want to be treated.
@galadrial - Indeed. The same type of mentality that is currently blocking gays from marrying is what kept interracial marriage illegal for so long. The same mentally deranged arguments about marriage to children and animals that christians routinely make, just redirected now to reflect a different group they’d like to deny rights to.
It failed then and we are seeing it fail now. It’s just taking longer for people to understand how unconstitutional it is to oppose it.
*sigh* I just don’t get how could someone oppose love
@randomneuralfirings - You realize that my “attacks” on Marcus Bachmann were meant to be ironic, considering he runs a “pray the gay away” clinic and is married to one of the most violently anti-gay people in Congress, right? It’s not like I’m picking random people and going “look at the homo!”

GL, no @randomneuralfirings and his ilk- simply don’t get it and this what is frustrating. He thinks because he is against “bullying” them…whatever that might be in his mind….this somehow validates his stance that it is OK to treat LGBT as second class citizens.
RNF is a bigger tool than Lobo if ya ask me.
Even though I am a Christian and believe that scripture is true and clear about what is the appropriate sexual relationship, I also acknowledge that we do not and should not live in a theocracy. I am an NC resident and I’m sure you’ve heard of the amendment one passing. It is scary to me to think that the government can step in and define what a family is. Although theologically, like I said, I believe there is a proper way to have a romantic relationship with someone, I also understand the constitution and as long as something does not interfere with life, liberty or property, then it shouldn’t be such a hill to die on.
What a breath of fresh air. If only the vast majority of Christians thought and acted that way, I’m pretty sure the vast majority of atheists/agnostics/skeptics would stop talking about religion. We would have little reason to do so if that was the case. I’m kind of infamous in these parts as a pretty extreme anti-theist. The reason for that is that quite a bit of Christians (especially the most well-funded ones) are actively trying to squash the rights of those they find objectionable, and trying to force their beliefs down everyone’s throats by making some of them into laws. If that wasn’t the case, I’d GLADLY focus my energies on other things.
You’re definitely a forward-thinking believer. And that’s rare, sadly. Kudos.
@In_Reason_I_Trust - @jessispeaks@revelife - *thinks* Perhaps instead of trying to avoid these types of discussions, then, I need to put in my two cents just to show that not all Christians are the same. I hold similar views to Jessispeaks, as do many of my friends. It’s just that I don’t really like to get involved in heated debates because I don’t feel that I have anything to contribute or will be heard through the screaming matches. :-/
@Ooglick - Yes, you absolutely should throw in your input. Otherwise the only Christians we hear from are the vitriolic anti-homosexual crowd. I know that’s not all there is, but it’s easy to begin to forget that when the only side that speaks up is the extreme right.
@Ooglick - A big fucking DITTO to what @GodlessLiberal - just said. The voices of those believers that are more tempered and open in their views need to be heard. The bigoted, closed-minded ones are far too loud and obnoxious. By all means, don’t refrain from sharing your views.
@Ooglick - I’ll throw my hat into the “Christians who avoid heated debates” ring. I just don’t care for my views being belittled, especially considering I share a lot of the Liberal views with those who attack Christians for their views.
@Garistotle - Except you do throw in, just only when you disagree with me, giving me a skewed perspective of what I consider your beliefs to be.
@GodlessLiberal - I throw snarky remarks in response to similarly snarky remarks.
My sexuality got me into trouble too. I am not here anymore. I miss myself.
@ZombieMom_Speaks - You do realize that in response to me calling out someone’s specific behavior you went on a rant about a whole bunch of people I have absolutely no control over doing things that I don’t agree with.
@GodlessLiberal - I totally realize that you were specifically attacking Marcus Bachmann because you disagree with his views. I also realize that you somehow believe that makes your homophobic remarks okay.
You could put all of these same signs in front of Christians who have been persecuted for their faith.
@TheTheologiansCafe - Gays aren’t asking for the persecution to stop. They’re only protesting that the bigotry and discrimination not be given the force of law. It is one thing to mock a married gay couple, but all together another for the state to irrationally withhold the civil right.
It’s not illegal for Christians to marry. Unlike gays, it has never been illegal for Christians to sleep with their loved ones. Christians have never been excluded from teaching or from adopted just because of their Christianity.
@TheTheologiansCafe - Oh, boo hoo! A white, American Christian complaining about persecution! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! Sure, there are some countries in which Christians are the minority and are persecuted. But, there’s not a WHIFF, not a trace of Christian persecution in the US of A. Au contraire, mon frere.
*facepalm*
@In_Reason_I_Trust - I tend to disagree with you. There may not be Christians dying in the America due to persecution, but there is still persecution. I mean isn’t that you are doing to TheTheologiansCafe? You’re oppressing Theologian’s beliefs and opinion.
You could put all of these same signs in front of Christians who have been persecuted for their faith. You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.
Christianity is nowhere near having a persecuted status in America. In Iraq, or Egypt, sure, but not here. Christians in America don’t have to fear for their lives from the government or from some extremist group. Persecution =/= having your beliefs mocked by atheists.
As an atheist and a person who is pro gay-rights, I have to agree with the “boo-hoo” sentiment. You really think you have it bad enough to call it persecution? Give me a break. You make up the majority in this country. Atheists/gays, on the other hand, are the ones who have to deal with death threats, being treated as second class citizens, Etc. I’m afraid to identify myself as an atheist because I fear I’d be treated differently. I have to wake up and live a lie every day because people can’t accept me for what I am. Gays are treated the same way, actually they’re probably treated worse. Are you afraid to identify as a Christian, Dan? Do you have any idea what that’s like? I doubt it, especially in Texas.
@Soul_Pizza - The post says nothing about limiting it to people in the U.S. and my comment said nothing about limiting it to people in the U.S.
@In_Reason_I_Trust - I call bullshit on that. People hate on Christians all the time. If I had a dollar for every time said something hateful about us, I’d be extremely wealthy.
@TheTheologiansCafe - Ok then, that’s a start. So what point are you trying to make by your statement, then? Yes, I understand that gays aren’t the only people in the world that have it bad. There are starving children in Africa, but that isn’t really relevant to this conversation. The Jews were persecuted by the Nazis, but that is also not really relevant. So what are you saying?
@Semper_medusa - What he’s saying is true – in terms of what the word persecution actually means, Christians are not persecuted in America. So people have said mean things about you? I’m sorry… but did you fear for your life? Were these people a part of the government trying to oppress you, or an extremist group? No? Then that’s not persecution. Real religious persecution is 100 times worse than anything you’ve experienced as a Christian in this country, I promise you.
@Ooglick - i agree with Reason and Godless. you should by all means put in your 2 cents. my dad was a Christian Minister and he was also most tolerant and reasoned. i have never personally known a Christian as intolerant toward others as what i often see here on Xanga, the kind who make the religion look bad. you’ll get attacked from time to time but when you think of it so did Jesus. it didn’t stop him. and not to be misleading, i’m a Buddhist for over 25 years, a decision my father had no problem with.
@TheTheologiansCafe - Oh no, a white middle class Christian complaining about your civil rights? You know what, I learned recently that you should be happy that you’re part of the 1% of history! You haven’t died of the plague, scurvy or smallpox. You haven’t been drawn and quartered, drowned or stoned for witchcraft. You, good sir, and part of the 1% of history and should shut the fuck up about anything else that anyone says about anything, because as you’ve pointed out countless times, as long as you’re better than the rest of history you should be thankful. So also please stop commenting about unemployment rate, it’s been worse, so why could you possibly ask for better (unless, of course, you realize you have been accusing liberals of using this attack on womens’ rights to further your right-wing agenda).
We just think that human rights are not based on what people do with their genitalia in order to gain sexual pleasure. I mean should one man giving another an anal penile implant really be a source of human rights?
I’m not joking when I say that I think Dan is a bigger idiot than Curtis.
@TheTheologiansCafe - Christianity is treated by electroshock therapy in the US? Christians are afraid to walk the streets? Give me a fucking break.
Can’t you just have a little human compassion instead of being so… republican?
I like you, but please stop timestamping…
I just want to point out that there are hundreds of laws protecting religion which by all means is a CHOICE. You wake up day after day choosing to believe in what you do. You CHOOSE to go to church or mosque or temple or wherever it is you go to worship. You are protected under the law to do those things from persecution and discrimination. However when it comes to sexual orientation, something a large majority agree is innate and unchangeable, there are nowhere near as many laws protecting it. Why does a choice given more protection than something that is for the most part innate?
As for the Privilege Bitching going on re: Christian Discrimination:
Sexuality is private and does not force its way into others business by judging their life-experience, issuing rules and condemnations on how others live their lives. Religion does. Religion does not get to play the poor, attacked, innocent minority when it cast the first stone by laying out discriminatory rules and dogma in the first place. Comparing discrimination based on religion to discrimination based on sexuality is like comparing a guy punching a guy for spitting in his face to a guy punching a guy for having red hair.
I don’t advocate discrimination or hateful attitudes at all. But don’t be so intellectually dishonest as to pretend that religion is an innocent party. Religion drew the battle-lines by setting out dogma in the first place. Sexuality did no such thing.
@randomneuralfirings - I consider it more of an explanation of why people feel the way they do about christians, and what it will take to change people’s minds.
how come nobody else is pointing out the obvious in this comments discussion? Christianity is a choice. homosexuality is not.
@Insomnia_Pickles_XtraTomato - I’m with @agnophilo - on this one. I tried to choose Christianity for a long time while my faith was failing me, and couldn’t. I could no more choose Christianity than I could choose to believe gravity goes up, at this point.
@GodlessLiberal - I was more thinking that people are born into it via indoctrination, but that is true too.
For you people to call others bullies just because they dont believe what you believe or have the same opinion as you, is bullying and intolerant. YOU my friend are a bully because you dont want others to think different than you.
Unfortunately people you don’t understand. It is NOT religion that is trying to control the laws of this country. What you dont understand apparently is that you all are trying to change the definition of a word. Religious people are not argueing that you cannot have a union between male and male or female and female. Our objection is that you want to change the definition of a word that has been in existence long before you were even thought of, born, or this country was made. The word “marriage’ in the dictionary, around the world, everywhere means a union between a MAN (with a naturally made penis, not sown from a vagina, XY chromosomes) and a woman (not a vagina made from a penis, XX chromosomes). No matter what the sexual persuasion – and that’s what its really about, who you choose to have sex with and live with- MARRIAGE means man and woman, male and female.
Understand people, that you cant just change a word just because you want to. The color blue is now the color orange??? Ridiculous. If your argument is REALLY about getting ALL the benefits of marriage- male and female- then work on changing the laws to give you those rights. That should not be hard to do. IF that is truly what this argument is about. WHich I dont think it is. Take heed people, one day whether you believe it or not, it doesnt mean it isnt true, you will have to stand before God the Creator of Heaven and earth and answer to why you lived the life you lived. Wake up. Read the bible and see for yourself what it says. Not what the media or liberals tell you it says. Even if they say they are “Christian liberals.” I love you and will pray for your eyes to be opened. Take care! Peace
