  • huh…   believe it or not, i didn’t realize it is illegal to marry a cousin at certain places…

  • I’m kinda surprised to see that deep blue states like California, New York and Massachusetts are totally OK with cousin marrying. Wasn’t expecting that.

  • Better question, what if you wanted to marry several of your gay cousins!?  And a dog?

I’m with @randomneuralfirings, suprised by the states that do allow cousins marrying, and some that don’t.

  • @randomneuralfirings - Frankly, so am I. My personal guess as to what many states are like that is because it was on the books and nobody has bothered to spearhead the campaign to take on that issue, or there was nothing on the books against it and again nobody is actively fighting to get rid of the law. (Let’s be honest, what politician wants to be known for incest laws? Even if you’re fighting against them, you’ll be known as the “incest guy”.)

I’m curious (genuinely curious, not looking to start a fight) are there religious organizations out there fighting to protect THIS sanctity of marriage? Either for or against?

  • I live in Florida, so I totally understand why it’s legal here. All the rednecks here would get pissed off. (This is a joke. I don’t feel like getting in an argument about the tone of my comment today.)

  • I’m not surprised about the cousing marrying. Like you, I think it just has never been taken off the books. I wouldn’t marry any of MY cousins, but I’m not sure I have a problem with it in general. What if they love each other? They would certainly know about the possible consequences of inbreeding and be prepared. It’s the same with people who know that they have a recessive gene for some disease and have kids anyway.

  • @whyzat - I agree. There’s an interstate west of here and the speed limit it 60, it’s ridiculous, but that law was established when cars did not go very fast, you could easily pull an 80 with cruise control. I’m for anyone marrying who they want as long as it is not harmful.

  • @whyzat - I believe some institute in Britain did a study and the results showed the chance of first cousins having a child with a birth defect was the same as if a partner was over 35 and having a child.

In my state it is legal under certain circumstances.  Now I simply must google what those circumstances are.

  •  Wait, “legal under certain circumstances?” *puzzled* Do they suddenly not become your blood relative by some weird happenstance? lol. “Steve wanted to marry Sally, but was unable to until Sally got her last name changed and moved out of his aunt’s basement.” ???

@snarkius - Ah. Googling. That would help… *wanders off*

  • Fuck.  This makes me want to punch people.  HOWEVER I am happy to see that Tx/La are not on the list.

  • @GodlessLiberal - I would guess that no one is fighting to make cousin marrying illegal is because most people assume that it already is, even in states where it’s currently legal like Alabama or Connecticut. Plus there is such a stigma against it that it probably doesn’t matter either way. No, I’m not aware of anyone fighting for or against the legalization of marriage between first cousins, religious or otherwise.
