God’s Loophole (NSFW)
“I do whatever the Bible tells me to
Except for the parts that I choose to ignore
Because they’re unrealistic and inconvenient
But the rest, I live by for sureSo let’s not talk about how the good book
Bans shellfish, polyester and divorce
And how it condones slavery and killing gays
Because those parts don’t count of course
Let’s cherry pick the part about losing my cherry
And [midgets] for ambiguities and omissions
And circumvent any real sacrifice
And still feel pious in my arbitrary parroted positions
And don’t you dare question my convictions
And don’t look closely at the contradictions
Just focus on the sacrificial crucifixion
And have faith in its complete jurisdictionIt’s the only way to measure if you’re good or not
And when you’re in a debate, just say to have faith
Because when up against logic it’s the only card you’ve got”

I didn’t play the video. What I really hate is when someone survives a disaster in which others died, including children, and claim it was their faith that saved them. What does that say about those who died some of whom likely had greater faith than the survivor in question?
@TheSutraDude - I didn’t play the video either. lol. Yeah- that is one thing that I think is awful too. Death is arbitrary, or if it’s not arbitrary then it’s too intricate of a web of cause/effects for us to figure out. For someone to say “God liked me enough to save me” implies that he didn’t love all of those people who died. That’s not right. I cherry pick because the God of the old testament is downright horrifying, and if that is what God is actually like then I am very, very sad. I can only hope that the old testament was written through the lens of “the winner writes the legends.” I cherry pick because if God is like Jesus then I’d be ok with that God. But maybe that’s wrong of me. *shrug* I figure if this cherry picking is making me kinder toward other people and I’m not trying to force it on anyone else then what does it matter? If I’m thrown in hell for not liking violence and inequality then the universe is very messed up anyway.
@Ooglick - It’s especially egregious in small bible belt communities where the survivor likely sat next to the deceased every Sunday in church. How one behaves toward others is a measure of one’s character development.
@TheSutraDude - I can understand them wanting to feel secure, like the reason they didn’t die was because they were loved by God and he protected them…but life doesn’t really work that way. :-/
@TheSutraDude - Either extreme egotism or extreme compartmentalism/denial.
@Ooglick - As for cherry picking one way to look at it is to imagine a GPS device that gets you to a destination sometimes but just as often doesn’t. I grew up with such a metaphorical GPS device. I believed there had to be a GPS device that worked out there somewhere and went about searching for it. It required that I take the words “Seek and ye shall find” to heart. One has to ask, if Jesus was the way why would he have made that proclamation? He sought wholeheartedly and learned from other religions and philosophies. There was no such thing as Christianity when he lived. He was a good person all in all and not a bad mentor. He shared ideas he found in his search with his contemporaries but he missed some things.
@Ooglick - I understand that too but they think that way because it’s what they were taught and didn’t think much about.
@agnophilo - And/or simply not thinking of the ramifications of what they are saying.
Why is it that men aren’t supposed to be virgins when they get married? Oh wait if you are a Christian then you are allowed to have children before marriage too (great shades of Sarah Palin’s daughter having a child and a “shotgun” marriage.Sex is complicated and it is not easy to stay on the straight and narrow….
The gorgeous post learned a great deal Thanks greatly!certifications
@TheSutraDude - As a Christian… this has actually been bothering me lately… it makes me feel like if I assume God protected me more I’m saying He didn’t love someone as much or that I somehow ‘worked’ for it through my faith. meanwhile, people in m faith are dieing from cancer and natural disasters all the time that God is not saving them from…
@TheSutraDude - Yeah, or that. I tend to assume people have thought about the things they say. I shouldn’t do that.@xXrEMmUsXx - It’s like when people assume god “blessed” america because we’re christian and have lots of natural resources, as though the soil conditions and climate didn’t allow native americans to prosper for thousands of years before we came here.
I like when People who are faithless and say God doesnt exist think they Know him the most…..They think they have all the answers and they act like they know more than anyone else. Arrogant Atheists really tick me off. I also love everyone who comments on here who Bitch and whine and complain Like God didnt suffer or know what we went through……
@xXrEMmUsXx - we all have a time and an end. Just because someone have a purple cape doesnt mean they are not a superhero…..
@xXrEMmUsXx - Yes that’s the way I see it too. Many wonderful people die earlier than they thought they would. Many wonderful people become disabled for life because of some incident. Children are born with birth defects.
@agnophilo - I think we think more about things that are important to us but can’t think deeply about everything. There’s not enough time in the day. I wish I could have ventured further into physics. I wish I had the knowledge to fix my car myself haha. I think in the case of religion many were simply born into this or that religion and don’t question much if at all but defend it vehemently.
@TheSutraDude - Just like our state’s football team and our nation’s flag. And fuck their herd, our herd is the best one!
@agnophilo - Yes and New Hampshire is “god’s country” but wait…Tennessee is “god’s country”. Vermont makes the same claim. It’s all so confusing. And who had the gall to claim the Dallas Cowboys are “America’s Team”? They aren’t in my playbook.
@TheSutraDude and @xXrEMmUsXx - One of the major reasons why Christianity has become so popular, at least in the Western world, is because it has been modified to fit those cultures’ comparatively self-centered, self-absorbed, individualistic outlooks on life. It practically caters to it. Just look at all the Southern Evangelicals who never conduct any community service, promote selfish political philosophies like neo-anarchist capitalism, preach individualism above society and altruism, and believe that God personally oversees every aspect of their lives. Christianity has been molded, like a puzzle piece, to neatly fit with their worldview. As a result, when something good happens, God is rewarding them for actions they committed. When something bad happens, God is punishing them for their transgressions. Every occurrence in the universe is ostensibly occurring on their behalf, just for them. As someone who grew up studying the natural sciences, and the utter chaos that drives it, this outlook on life and faith is simply mind-boggling. I mean, I can understand why it would be comforting; it’s just kind of naive, at best, when you think very much about it (and, more specifically, look outside yourself and see all the suffering, injustice, evil, etc. that occurs in the world for, clearly, no reason).
