Just How Stupid Are We?: Facing the Truth About the American Voter
By Rick Shenkman
see relatedWe're Number One!
I got a reprieve from the hospital for a weekend vacation, which I spent getting reacquainted with a side of my family that I have previously had little to no contact with. After meeting many of these people, some of whom had more NASCAR tattoos than teeth, I realized that I was happier before making contact. These people were rednecks in redneck country (I should explain: this part of northern Minnesota is like rural Texas with the accent from the movie Fargo, plus eight months of the year you can't leave your front door without getting frostbite on your testicles.) I spent the fourth of July lighting explosives that I'm sure are illegal in Minnesota, not to mention the rest of the United States (and most of the free world). Because what better way to celebrate your country's independence then by blowing up a small part of it? And their mentality reminded me of one of the things I hated most about America under the Bush years (and which apparently still hasn't died, but is just waiting for the resurrection of Ronald Reagan to come out into the open again): the attitude of America being better than everyone and everything else in the universe.
Amongst the most obnoxious tenancies of redneck culture her in the US is to declare the United States as number one, with no regard for what that actually means. It seems to come out especially loudly when the Olympics or any other foreign event happens to be held on our soil, as if chanting "U.S.A.!" loudly enough will convince all other nations of our superiority.
In total industrial output, political clout, and military spending there is no doubt that America is number one. But I posit that the way we care for our own might be a more telling criteria than these. So please consider:- The US is 49th in the world in literacy, and is 28th out of 40 ranked nations in mathematical literacy.
- Our provision and quality of health care and medicine ranks near the bottom of industrialized nations.
- Childhood poverty is more prevalent here than in all developed countries save for Mexico.
- The best run companies and most successful banks are predominantly European.
- The proportion of scientific articles published by Americans is declining sharply..
- The US ranks 41st in the world in infant mortality.
The rest of the world seems to regard America as greedy, violent, rude and immoral. That's a rather full range of dislike. And attitudes about America's governing body is even more negative. The most prominent view of America by outsiders is that America cares only about itself.
Our constant chanting of "we're number one!" is an affront to the people of the world, and this includes foreign policy that we believe we know better than the rest of the world about. (And Iraq has quite obviously shown that we're wrong about that.) This national arrogance just creates fissures in our relationships with the rest of the world. It also gives us a false sense that if we're number one, nothing is wrong in "God's favorite country", nevermind those infant mortality numbers. America needs to make a concerted effort, at both the government and individual level, to realize that there's a lot of world out there besides us, and we're far less than number one in quite a few things.
Did you know: In America, no matter who you are, you are 150 times more likely to be arrested than mugged (this includes New York City, where the study originated.

If America would return to GOD, then ALL of these things would be straightened out! His WRATH is upon this nation! GOD shall NOT be MOCKED!!!
:P
P.S. I rather like fireworks, I confess... haha.
But we're number 1 in arrogance! You can't forget that!
USA
USA
A pretty good place to be dropped out of the womb, but I had nothing to do with that.
Nice to see an American being honest and realistic! America isn't a completely bad place but it's certainly not the greatest in certain respects. I enjoy being Canadian, though. I like my funny coloured money and free health care
"The US is 49th in the world in literacy, and is 28th out of 40 ranked nations in mathematical literacy."
That's yer lib'ral edycashun system fer ya.
"Our provision and quality of health care and medicine ranks near the bottom of industrialized nations."
A bogus statistic according to my med school daughter. Canada has a 16% higher incidence of cancer than the U.S. and patients there have to wait an average of 8 weeks longer for radiation diagnosis and treatment than in the U.S. The Europeans are very aware of the problems with their socialized health systems. Just give employers a tax credit for every dollar spent on employee health care. That will take care of much of the problem.
"Childhood poverty is more prevalent here than in all developed countries save for Mexico."
Think there might be a linkage there? Maybe if we closed the border, our childhood poverty rate would decline.
"The best run companies and most successful banks are predominantly European."
Not the banks. Best banks are Canadian. Of course, European companies don't hire their immigrant population, either. British companies are in the toilet right now and for the foreseeable future.
"The proportion of scientific articles published by Americans is declining sharply"
But what about the raw number? Maybe the other countries are gearing up? Doesn't mean our output is dropping.
"The US ranks 41st in the world in infant mortality."
My med school daughter says that this is another bogus statistic. Many other countries don't count infant mortality the same way that we do. For some, most of their infant deaths aren't recorded. Illegal immigrants tend to not get adequate health care, so this further exacerbates the problem. See below for more info:
""It is a problem of racial disparity," said Dr. Eve Lackritz, chief of the Maternal and Infant Health Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The organizations found that, regardless of income, four times more black women die from pregnancy, deliver prematurely or produce more low-weight babies than white women in the United States." http://www.seattlepi.com/national/335391_maternal13.html
I wonder how the U.S. compares with African nations on black infant mortality?
"The rest of the world seems to regard America as greedy, violent, rude and immoral."
And, of course, once they get to immigrate here, America is the greatest thing since sliced bread. America, in good economic times, is the no. 1 choice of immigrants. Immoral? You mean that muslims diss us because of the porn and promiscuity? No!?
Violent? Like when we went after al Quaeda in Afghanistan and what Obama is doing now? The muslims diss us for daring to defend ourselves? No!?
American liberals are No. 1 in guilt and they want the rest of us to suffer for it.
Exactly! Coincidentally, this is also goes along the lines of what McNamara (RIP) said. Thinking that we're the greatest blinds us to the fact that we are just as vulnable as any other nation. It is this kind of unilateral thinking is what got us into Vietnam and Iraq. The bottom line is that if other like-minded countries aren't going to do what we want to do (enter a country with force), then we have to reconsider our course of action, irregardless of how #1 we are. There's no such thing as an immortal and invincible country.
Okay, except maybe Switzerland.
I want to hand this out on the streets.
Every 4th of July, I feel like people are just ignoring reality. Our nation has big problems. And fireworks don't solve them.
Ha! Awesome entry.
America is a cool country to live in, don't get me wrong, but we have some SERIOUS changes to make before we can be half as awesome as we think we are. Though, i doubt anyone could be half as awesome as Americans THINK they are.
It reminds me of the guy who lives in my neighborhood who i fondly call "Asshole." He drives around in a huge gas guzziling hummer/suv/monster truck with two full sized American flags on the back. Yep, no better way to show support for your country than driving a car that uses the oil that is sold to us by the people who want to kill us. Real patriotic.
Who need healthcare, education, and science when you can have fireworks. USA USA.
@soccerdadforlife - Wow everything you said was just flat out ignorant.
"That's yer lib'ral edycashun system fer ya."
Was that a pun on how liberals speak? Because quite frankly it seems rather southern, something characteristic of mostly conservatives. And it seems like you're just upset they're not teaching God in schools; well it shouldn't be there so get over it.
"A bogus statistic according to my med school

Your daughter is a failure because quite frankly, people prefer Canada's health care system, doctors included. Doctors with ethics****. Someone needs to watch the documentary SiCKO.
"Think there might be a linkage there? Maybe if we closed the border, our childhood poverty rate would decline."
Not really; considering most of the impoverished children are not immigrants statistically. Its America's failure of an economy, not the amount of immigrants. And I'm pretty sure you're a descendant of an immigrant as well.
"Not the banks. Best banks are
Canadian. Of course, European companies don't hire their immigrant
population, either. British companies are in the toilet right now and
for the foreseeable future."
Uh say what? Wrong much? European companies don't discriminate like American ones do, they're not nearly as ignorant as American run companies. In fact, American companies are willing to hire immigrants more because its cheaper; they're willing to work for less. And where the fuck do you think your products are being made? OH RIGHT, in foreign countries. God you're stupid.
"And, of course, once they get to immigrate
here, America is the greatest thing since sliced bread. America, in
good economic times, is the no. 1 choice of immigrants. Immoral? You

Actually most people that come here come for better pay and then they go back to where they came from. Pretty sure everyone knows how shitty the US is considering American culture is mind numbingly retarded and lacks any real meaning. And when it comes to porn, the most conservative and demographically Christian states have higher rates of purchasing it.
"Violent? Like when we went after al
Quaeda in Afghanistan and what Obama is doing now? The muslims diss us
for daring to defend ourselves? No!?"
1. You can't even spell the terrorist group's name.
2. They are not one in the same with Islam.
3. Obama is doing what exactly? It hasn't even been a year; were in this shit because of Bush dumbass.
4. Middle Eastern people have dissed you for years, because you're ignorant and uncultured. The truth hurts.
Nationalism is a terrible thing. Being realistic is a good thing. I listened to someone yell off, "F@CK *insert country name here" for about fifteen minutes before someone responded, "F@CK YOU!" and took him to the floor. Personally, I agree with the second person. Our country may have some positives, but let's be realistic. A) We're not the only ones here and we rely on the other countries for many things. B) We're not perfect at all. There are a lot of things that we could be learning from other countries if we weren't so stuck up.
Being humble is a good thing. Allowing yourself to learn from others is another good thing. We have lots to learn still.
@helvetebrann - I liked your last statement and completely agree with it.
@BunnyParfait -
Actually most people that come here come for better pay and then they go back to where they came from. Pretty sure everyone knows how shitty the US is considering American culture is mind numbingly retarded and lacks any real meaning.
Haha thismade me laugh cause this is what occurs here all the time! They go to american for like 10 years or so and save there money like mad, then head back home and retire- It's too hard to ignore that one US dollar equals 5 EGP. So in the words of one villager "just open a pizza shop- live and work there and you make a ton of money- Americans are crazy about pizza"
I also do not care for american arrogance I think it hinders a lot with our policy making and being able to work with others. But I also view America as a Teenager- young, disrespectful, thinks they are invinscible, shuns older wisdom, adventerous, reckless ect.
Yet people insist on crossing borders and oceans to come live here. Having grown up in India, I can truly say that America has the public image as that of heaven. When I go back to India and I see people struggling to save up money for years just so they can buy a ticket to visit and see New York, it's hard for me to break their bubble that it's alright but it's really not all that awesome.
Having said that, I still have to say that I am thankful to America for all the opportunites it's given me.
@Persiankitty - Canada is so much more awesome, dude. I wish my parents moved to Canada when they had the chance. I am stuck in the US now for (because of education/accreditation purposes. I go to med school and I have a lot of Canadian friends who are in the same school as me, and I'm aware of how much better the standards are for becoming a doctor in Canada.)
@soccerdadforlife - more than 45 million people in the US have NO medical insurance. that number includes children. i am in med school too and i prefer a healthcare system similar to that of canada's, doctor's pay and all as long as it covers my education loans.
i just checked the CIA world factbook and USA infant mortality is number 180 in the world. https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2091rank.html
@BunnyParfait - "European companies don't discriminate like American ones do" BWAHAHAHAH. You've obviously emptied the pitcher of brainwashing koolaid.
Michael Moore isn't taken seriously by anyone with a brain.
@royal_diadem - Maybe the parents don't want to pay for their children's insurance because they spend their money on booze, cigarettes, and $200 sneakers. Sorry, not the government's problem. People from Canada come to the U.S. to get radiation treatment, not the other way.
"I go to med school and I have a lot of Canadian friends who are in the same school as me, and I'm aware of how much better the standards are for becoming a doctor in Canada."
Maybe the standards are so high that they prevent Canada from graduating enough doctors. Optimal standards are better than ideal standards. You haven't addressed the reason why Canada outsources its medical care.
"i just checked the CIA world factbook and USA infant mortality is number 180 in the world." You do realize that that's a good thing, don't you? My daughter says that most of her classmates aren't able to do analysis, they just swallow whatever they're told (memorize).
The U.S. spends the most money on medical care, but doesn't get a good value. Part of the reason is that the government is so heavily involved in it. Your solution would make the problem even worse. Look for what the real problems are, not the superficial symptoms. That takes some thinking.
@kipahni - America is a pretty young nation comparatively, so the teenager image is very appropriate.
@soccerdadforlife - Is that all you have to say? LOL. Naivety at its finest. I'll just assume you're another misinformed American that helps the rest of the world confirm how idiotic the US really is. You'll be allowed to speak when you become educated about your own country. Fail.
Dismissed.
@soccerdadforlife - "Maybe the parents don't want to pay for

cigarettes, and $200 sneakers. Sorry, not the government's problem.

You have got to be the biggest fuck tard I've ever seen. lmao Are you fucking serious? These people without health insurance CAN'T AFFORD TO BASICALLY LIVE let alone have health insurance. Let me guess you're some middle class moron with no sense of reality and you think everything in America is just laughs and giggles and merchandise? Have you never BEEN to Chicago?
You need to read the book Mama Might Be Better Off Dead, in ALL seriousness. That is assuming you're literate.
Like any country you have a lot to learn but you have even more to teach. Your country is more blessed than most of your realise.
@royal_diadem - The CDC estimated the US at 29th in infant mortality in 2008 based on 2004 data.
