I do wonder how many of those are due to simply being the largest of the world’s richest nations. Still, American society is far from perfect and could stand for improvement.
That’s good news.
Amusing, in a sad way. One thing to keep in mind is that a lot of the other countries either have bad statistical resources for getting that data or they just lack the institutions to support people reporting these data. Seriously, people have trouble reporting rapes in America. What do you think South Africans do? Chinese prisoners? Yeah, no way in hell we beat China (unless this is a per-capita statistic), but recognize that there’s probably just a lot of missing prisoners! I wouldn’t trust their statistics.
I hate statistics. They are like religion: you have to take them on faith.
i find it the most funny that we are #1 in teen pregnancy…go whores!!!!
interesting
USA USA USA! ha ha ha
I’m really wanting to know where these statistics came from. How many countries were completely left out of this survey, and did they factor population sizes into this statistic?
You should definitely move somewhere else. I’m sure the rest of the world is dying for you to join them.
@blonde_apocalypse - I guess your motto is “love it or leave it.” That’s fine, but I have a question: I love my wife, but does that mean I have to divorce her if I criticise her about anything?
@blonde_apocalypse - By that reasoning, everybody who wants a religiously-based government should move to Iran, and everybody who wants to get rid of government institutions should move to Somalia.
Oh, and here’s a crazy thought, maybe the better idea is to work on improving things from the inside.
Number one in plastic surgery is good for the doctors. I don’t know if hospitals make much money on heart attacks though.
Definitely the number of mac Donalds and heart attacks is related.
@PPhilip - Our hospitals wouldn’t be so desperate for money if we didn’t have the most expensive health care of any first world nation.
@blonde_apocalypse - Fortunately, deluded nationalism isn’t pre-requisite for residency.
We definitely have a lot of work to do. But I agree with @bryangoodrich - the information provided from other countries is most likely inaccurate. Most things that go on here in Nam are so fabricated no one knows whats really going on. Surely they aren’t alone.
@GodlessLiberal - That would require people to care about other people and not live in bubbles of their own creations. So sad.
@DEISENBERG - It’s the attitude more than anything. If “criticizing” your wife means you periodically tell her, “I really didn’t like it when you did X, and I’d like to talk about that” then you are good. If by “criticize” you mean you tell everyone who will listen, “My wife is such a controlling, lazy, worthless bitch. I could have done so much better with any other woman.” Then you’re a douchebag, and you don’t deserve her. This post is “My country is a worthless bitch, and I would be so much better off anywhere else.” If that’s the attitude, then you should definitely go out and find the place you think is so much better.
The trouble is, you always take your douchebaggery with you wherever you go.
@GodlessLiberal - I’ve never seen any “improvement” come as a result of ridicule. Just doesn’t work that way. I think that “oh, hey, I bet you never thought of working on our problems, hu?” is just after-the-fact rationalization of an obviously bad attitude toward America.
It’s because of these facts, as well as many more, that I no longer consider myself as an American. Instead I consider myself a Global Citizen. I am not a member of any nation or tribe. I will not be identified with those aspects which I do not want identified as part of me.
@blonde_apocalypse - All you ever do when you come to my site is call me names and tell me to leave the country. By your logic, you should stop coming here and find another site to harass.
@GodlessLiberal - You post your opinions right out there in public for all the world to see. If you aren’t prepared either to defend or accept as legitimate whatever logical criticisms are lobbed at your opinions, then your opinions aren’t ready for publication. Or you aren’t self-honest.
@blonde_apocalypse - Right. And the US’s policies are right out there for the world to see, and if it isn’t prepared to either defend or accept as legitimate whatever logical criticisms are lobbed at its actions, then those actions shouldn’t be made.
I don’t see how the US could possibly be #1 in rape or teen birth rate. There must be messed up third world countries that blow us away in those categories.
I don’t think all of those stats are accurate, but most are. And the rape ones are actually tricky because often the more oppressive toward women the society is the less rapes are reported which deflates the statistics.
@blonde_apocalypse - This is a democracy, it’s our right and our responsibility to criticize our country’s failings and try to improve them. Burying our heads in the sand never solved anything. The notion that criticizing one’s government is un-patriotic and immoral only serves corrupt leaders. It is patriotism of a dictatorship, not a representative state.
The first three on the teen birth rate are USA (hooray!), the UK, and New Zealand. All fiirst world nations who track this sort of thing. Or in other words, all nations who care that kids are having kids (We’ll even include Slovakia in this catagory.) This statistic is actually encouraging because it shows that we think teen births are something to be concered about.
Parts of India still have child brides, and in much of the third world if you menstrate you are egible to be married. Too young to be married should still count as too young to have a baby. Not to mention the unmarried birth rate, which has to be high in areas where, as others have mentioned, rape isn’t reported. Statistice for hundreds of nations must have been left out for us to be on top on that one.
Just looking at those two, don’t you wonder about the rest? Oh, yes, I would guess the US has the most MacDonalds – it started here, it is an American corporation, why wouldn’t we have the most? Heart attacks – maybe. Not beyond the realm of possiblitity. But I’ll even question the CO2 emissions. We at least have some controls in place. China, on the other hand, is building at a tremendous rate without a thought to destroying natural resources (like air). I wouldn’t be surprised to find they are number 1 now.
It’s a pretty chart, it makes you think, but I wouldn’t trust most of those statistics.
I don’t know whether they are accurate or not but there are a couple other standings I would like to see included….spousal or child abuse, senior neglect, abortions (per capita). millionaires, homeless shelters, Aid such as (social security, welfare, aid for dependent children, unemployment, maintained federal parks, and single unit housing. Remembering that in most countries spanking children is not a crime. Ooops, I forgot communication..somewhere I heard that the average number of televisions in the middle class home is 3, telephones something like 5. This is not a criticism of your post only extentions I would be courious to see. I want to thank you for pointing out and posting the ones you did )
well, at least we’re aware we’re number 1, now what are we gonna do about it lol
The fact that “plastic surgery” is included is a bit judgemental, in my opinion. Plastic surgery is not, in and of itself, a bad thing. Sure, excessive body-modifying can be bad, especially when it’s done through social pressure/to advance one’s career/psychological issues. But saying “plastic surgery is wrong/a bad thing” is kinda rooted in the same irrational Abrahamic religion-centric prejudice that says “tattoos are bad.”
*I’m assuming it’s not you who made the stats-chart so my issue is directed at the person who did make it.

A bit selective, but point well taken.
God bless the USA!

We also have the most Fox News viewers.
@UTRow1 - that’s probably the worst.

In South Africa 1 in 3 women said they have been raped. It is more likely a girl in S.Africa will be raped than learn to read. http://www.rape.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=875 . In fact, we don’t even make the top 50, according to this: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_rap_percap-crime-rapes-per-capita. Lesotho is tops, and if you know anything about other parts of the world, this only makes sense.
